Why Is My TNPSC Photo Rejected?

Understand common TNPSC image rejection possibilities: format, pixels, KB, clarity, name/date and signature issues. Learn what to check before preparing a replacement.

Quick Answer

A rejected TNPSC photo can have the wrong file size, pixel dimensions, actual format or instructions from another recruitment. Clarity, required name/date details and selecting an older file are also worth checking. These are troubleshooting possibilities, not a description of every internal portal rejection rule; use the exact message and active official notice to choose your next check.

Start with the exact message and the correct application

Distinguish a stated file-validation error from a portal failure that gives no image-specific explanation. Note whether you were uploading the photograph or signature, then open that recruitment’s instructions. Do not repeatedly change every setting at once: it makes it harder to know which replacement corrected the problem.

This article explains how to reason about possible causes. The upload-error page provides quick keyword matching and direct routes to the relevant tools; its optional pasted text stays in browser memory.

TNPSC Photo & Signature Size Guide — sources and verification

File size can be too large or too small

The Group IV photograph range is 20–50 KB, while its signature range is 10–20 KB. The general guide instead says below 50 KB for photos without giving a minimum. Applying one source’s limit to the other can produce a mismatch.

Check actual bytes, not just a rounded label. A “49 KB” display is not a complete dimension or format check. A naturally small image may stay below a required minimum even at maximum JPEG quality; artificial padding does not improve the image and our tools do not add it. Start with a clearer, more detailed source if needed.

Pixel dimensions and actual format are separate checks

A photo that looks the right size on screen can have the wrong pixel width or height. Read the saved image properties and match the application’s aspect ratio before resizing. Cropping preserves proportions; stretching can distort the face.

Renaming a .png file to .jpg changes its name, not its encoding. Export JPEG when the instructions require it and reopen the result. JPEG has no transparency, so transparent input needs an appropriate solid background.

Older requirements and image quality can still matter

A previously accepted image is not proof that the current recruitment uses the same rules. For Group IV 2026, Annexure I §3.3 calls for a studio photograph taken on or after 6 October 2026, with the required view and white background. §3.4 excludes selfies, mobile-phone photographs and photocopies. A compressor cannot determine whether a source satisfies those content requirements.

Inspect the downloaded image at full size. Blurred facial detail, heavy shadows or a severely enlarged thumbnail cannot be repaired by simply lowering KB. Use a suitable original rather than repeatedly compressing an already damaged image.

Check required name/date details and signature strokes

Where the active notice requires the candidate’s name and date of photography, inspect the bottom of the final file rather than only the editor preview. Today’s date is not automatically the right date. A readable text strip can still differ from a recruitment’s prescribed layout.

For a signature, preserve all strokes and use the required white background. Excessive compression, faint ink and tightly cropped edges can reduce legibility even when KB is within range.

Make one replacement and verify it

  • Download a fresh result and reopen it to confirm the intended changes.
  • Check that the portal is selecting that file, not the original or an earlier download with a similar name.
  • Compare format, dimensions, bytes and visible content with the current source.
  • If no file problem explains the message, use the help channel shown on the official portal rather than guessing an internal error code.
